Do you try to eat GF (guilt-free) food?

I have a lot of clients and friends who try to choose foods that are ‘guilt-free’. Let’s take ice-cream as an example. Instead of real ice-cream, the health space has led us to believe that banana ‘n-ice cream’ is better and healthier for us.

But here’s my problem with banana n-ice cream or ‘guilt-free’ foods.

When companies, or individuals, market / think of foods as guilt-free, it can cause shame when you just want to eat the real thing. It places morality on food as labels them as ‘good’ or ‘bad’. Food shouldn’t be a moral choice – it should be a personal choice, and one you should never feel bad about making!

The more banana n-ice cream we eat when we actually want the real deal, the more you may actually want real ice-cream. The more we restrict or deprive ourselves of the delicious ‘treat’ food we want, the more we obsess and focus on these foods. Then when we do eat those foods (such as real ice-cream) we end up binging on it because we have deprived ourselves from it. This then leads to feelings of guilt and shame. And then the feeling of shame is attached to ice-cream, making us feel like we shouldn’t eat it. And so the guilt / restrict / binge cycle continues.

Generally I like to take a balanced approach to diet. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for including as much nutrition as possible to make you feel good, but we should not label foods as ‘good’ or ‘bad’. Food is, well, food. No food should ever be morally better than the other. Because when we label foods this way, we feel guilty or shameful when we eat the ‘bad’ ones.
